Delhi wants you to break up with your petrol bike by 2026. Yep, you read that right. If the draft EV Policy 2.0 gets the green light, Delhi might ban petrol, diesel, and even CNG two-wheelers starting August 15, 2026. And honestly? It feels like the city’s drawing a hard line: clean up or get off the road.
What’s going on?
This is all part of Delhi’s new push to tackle its (very visible and very breathable) pollution problem. Delhi’s been in a constant state of a disastrous AQI for a while. Every winter feels like breathing through a smoky filter. Cars, bikes, stubble burning, construction dust—it’s all stacked against us.
So now, Delhi has taken matters in its hands. This policy might seem harsh, but it's the capital saying: "We’ve tried gentle. Now we’re doing it the hard way." The draft policy doesn’t just go after personal bikes, it’s coming for CNG autos, goods carriers, and even government garbage trucks.
Some key dates:
- August 15, 2025: No new CNG auto registrations, no permit renewals. Only e-autos allowed.
- August 15, 2026: Petrol and CNG bikes? Done. If you’re still riding one, you’ll need to switch or sit out.
And if you already have two cars? The next one has to be electric. No more hoarding fossil-fuel rides.
This isn’t just a vehicle thing
The policy is also asking municipal bodies—MCD, NDMC, DJB—to get their act together. By the end of 2027, all garbage trucks? Electric. Public buses? Only e-buses for city travel, and BS VI-compliant ones for interstate.
Basically, if it moves and runs on fuel, Delhi wants it swapped out.
But Is this final?
Not yet. The policy is still in draft mode, and there’s a chance the two-wheeler rule might get tweaked before the final nod. But the direction is clear—Delhi isn’t just suggesting change anymore, it’s enforcing it.
If you’re in Delhi and riding fossil fuel, you've probably got a two-year countdown. Time to start looking at what’s electric, what’s worth the switch, and what actually fits your lifestyle.
