MG Motor India has just hit a new high. In just six months since its launch, the MG Windsor EV has sold 20,000 units, making it the fastest-selling electric vehicle in the country. This achievement marks a significant turning point in MG’s EV journey and positions the Windsor as a serious rival to Tata’s Nexon EV.
MG steadily closing in on Tata’s EV dominance
While Tata Motors still leads the Indian EV space with a 53% share in FY25 (selling 57,616 units), MG is quickly gaining ground. MG Motor recorded a 28% EV market share with 30,162 units sold during the same period.
Retail data as of March 2025 showed MG’s retail share at 31%, still behind Tata's 38%, but notably ahead of where it stood just a year earlier.
Monthly sales show Windsor’s growing pull
MG’s real momentum began in late 2024. Monthly EV market share grew from just 14.12% in January 2024 to a peak of 41.29% in December 2024. With Windsor's launch in September 2024, MG’s EV sales rose steadily, from 1,203 units in January 2024 to 3,889 units in March 2025.
Since November 2024, MG has been averaging over 3,000 units in EV sales per month, largely driven by Windsor’s popularity in both urban and semi-urban markets.
What’s driving Windsor’s success?
The MG Windsor is marketed as India’s first “Crossover Utility Vehicle” (CUV), combining SUV-like space with a sleeker design. It undercuts most rivals by offering premium features at a competitive price, making it a strong value proposition under ₹20 lakh.
Industry expert Anurag Singh from Primus Partners explains that better supply chains and growing options in the sub-₹20 lakh bracket have made budget EVs like the Windsor more accessible. Alongside models like the Tata Nexon EV and Tiago EV, Windsor is now a regular in the 3,000+ monthly deliveries club.
MG’s strategy and future push
According to Rakesh Sen, Director of Sales and Marketing at JSW MG Motor India, Windsor’s success lies in breaking common EV myths and addressing category pain points. It has allowed first-time EV buyers to make the switch more confidently.

This tailored approach, backed by availability, tech, and market positioning, has pushed Windsor to become a category leader in record time.
Final thoughts
With Windsor’s rapid rise, MG has proved that it’s no longer just an underdog in India’s EV race. The brand’s pace of growth, especially since late 2024, suggests that Tata’s stronghold might not stay unchallenged for long. As Windsor continues to gain traction, expect more competition, better products, and greater accessibility for Indian EV buyers.
