Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to make a mark in the EV segment with its first all-electric SUV, the e Vitara. Unveiled in Milan, this mid-size SUV, originally previewed as the eVX concept, will soon debut in India and promises to be a strong contender in the electric vehicle market.
Launch Timeline and Expected Pricing
The Maruti e Vitara will be launched in India in March 2025, with an anticipated starting price of around ₹20 lakh for the base model with a 49 kWh battery. The higher variants, including the AWD version, may go up to ₹30 lakh. A European launch is expected in June 2025, following which we can expect in to be launched in India.
Battery Options and Performance
The e Vitara will be available with two battery options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Here’s a breakdown of their specs:
- 49 kWh Battery: Generates 144 PS power and 189 Nm torque, driving the front wheels (2WD).
- 61 kWh Battery (2WD): Produces 174 PS power and 189 Nm torque.
- 61 kWh Battery with AWD: Combines a dual-motor system for 184 PS power and 300 Nm torque, offering a robust AllGrip-e AWD experience.
The larger 61 kWh battery model is expected to offer a range of over 500 km, making it suitable for longer commutes and road trips.
Design and Dimensions
The e Vitara maintains the rugged, muscular design introduced in the eVX concept. It features tri-slash LED DRLs, chunky body cladding, and a two-box profile that gives it a robust look. Key design highlights include large 19-inch alloy wheels, a high 180mm ground clearance, and a spacious 2,700mm wheelbase, ensuring a comfortable cabin experience.
With dimensions comparable to popular SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, the e Vitara is designed for versatility on Indian roads. The longer wheelbase not only allows for a large battery pack but also hints at a roomy interior with ample legroom and headroom.
Advanced Interior and Features
Inside, the e Vitara introduces a modern, feature-rich cabin with a floating dual-screen setup—one for infotainment and one for the driver’s display. Key interior elements include:
- Flat-bottom Steering Wheel: Provides a sporty touch.
- Rotary Drive Selector: Adds convenience and a premium feel.
- Physical AC Controls: For user-friendly climate management.
Expected features include automatic climate control, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and safety features like six airbags, a 360-degree camera, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist.
Platform and Technology
Built on the new Heartect-e platform, the e Vitara is a "born-electric" model co-developed with Toyota. This dedicated EV platform includes eAxles that integrate the motor and inverter, improving efficiency and reducing weight. The AWD model features Trail mode, which enhances traction by applying brakes to slipping wheels while channeling torque to those with grip, simulating a limited-slip differential.
