In a major step towards sustainable energy, JSW MG Motor India has teamed up with Vision Mechatronics to give electric vehicle (EV) batteries a second life. The companies are transforming used EV batteries into large-scale energy storage solutions, beginning with a 36 kW uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system for an industrial facility in Pune. This initiative promises a cost-effective and eco-friendly energy solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across India.
Extending Battery Lifespan Beyond EVs
Under this partnership, JSW MG Motor India provides batteries that are no longer roadworthy, while Vision Mechatronics repurposes these batteries for secondary applications. According to Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, this collaboration represents a significant advancement in sustainable battery management. "This project shows that a battery's usefulness doesn’t end when its time in an EV is over," he noted.
The project is part of JSW MG Motor India’s “Project Revive,” which focuses on reusing EV batteries in various applications. Previous pilot projects under this initiative include an off-grid charging station developed with IIT Delhi and a 5 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) deployed in collaboration with Lohum and Teri at a school in Nainital.
High-Voltage Batteries with Indigenous BMS Technology
A key feature of this project is the use of an indigenous Battery Management System (BMS) designed by Vision Mechatronics. This BMS ensures optimal performance and safety, incorporating features like advanced monitoring systems and protection against thermal runaway. Rashi Gupta, Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics, highlighted the flexibility of these second-life batteries, which can replace traditional diesel generators or function as UPS backups, catering to a range of industrial needs.
The current focus on UPS applications serves as an entry point, but plans are in place to explore broader applications over the next six months, demonstrating the versatility of second-life batteries.
A Sustainable Future for SMEs
As small and medium-sized enterprises face increasing energy demands, second-life batteries provide a sustainable and economical solution. This collaboration aligns with India’s commitment to a circular economy, reducing waste while advancing the nation’s renewable energy goals. By investing in such innovative projects, JSW MG Motor India is not only repurposing EV batteries but also making strides toward a greener, more resilient energy landscape.
Looking Ahead
The repurposing of EV batteries into large-scale energy storage is expected to set new standards in sustainable energy. This project has been showcased at The Battery Show, held from October 3-5, 2024, in Greater Noida, reflecting its potential to influence future developments in EV technology and renewable energy.
By reimagining EV batteries, JSW MG Motor India and Vision Mechatronics are creating pathways for long-term energy solutions that benefit both businesses and the environment. As Project Revive continues to grow, the impact on India’s sustainable energy future looks promising.
