Bengaluru-based startup Sarla Aviation has made history by unveiling Shunya, India's first electric air taxi prototype, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. This groundbreaking innovation is set to redefine urban mobility in the country, tackling congestion and pollution while enabling quicker, eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Shunya: A Game-Changer in Urban Mobility
Designed as an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Shunya boasts remarkable capabilities. It can carry up to six passengers with a maximum payload of 680 kg, making it the highest-capacity eVTOL currently in the market. Optimized for short trips of 20-30 km, the air taxi can achieve speeds of up to 250 km/h and offers a range of 160 km on a single charge.
According to Sarla Aviation's co-founder and CEO, Adrian Schmidt, "Shunya represents our commitment to creating a cleaner, more connected future while tackling urban challenges such as traffic congestion and pollution."
Initially set to launch in Bengaluru by 2028, Sarla Aviation plans to expand its air taxi service to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and other major cities. The pricing for this service is expected to be competitive with premium taxi fares, making it a viable option for urban commuters.
Shunya’s Features
The prototype comes equipped with advanced features such as:
- Electric propulsion system for clean, efficient transport.
- Vertical take-off and landing capability, allowing it to operate in urban environments with limited space.
- High capacity for passengers and luggage, making it practical for premium commuting needs.
Sarla Aviation's efforts align with the principles of Atma Nirbhar Bharat, emphasizing homegrown innovation and placing India at the forefront of global aviation advancements.
Free Air Ambulance Initiative
Beyond passenger transport, Sarla Aviation plans to introduce a free air ambulance service. This initiative aims to provide rapid medical assistance, saving precious time during emergencies and addressing critical healthcare needs in urban areas.
Funding to Fuel Innovation
Sarla Aviation, founded in October 2023 by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, recently secured $10 million in Series A funding. The investment was led by Accel, with contributions from notable angel investors, including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath. The funding will accelerate the development of cutting-edge technology and establish a dedicated research and development center to make Sarla Aviation’s vision a reality.
